Prince Philip, who died on Friday aged 99, became well known for his long record of inappropriate or awkward gaffes.
Whether he genuinely thought he was funny or simply lacked tact, the Duke of Edinburgh managed to cause offence, embarrassment or mirth at many public occasions something of which he himself was aware.
But in some cases, the prince s comments went further than mere gaffes. Most are deemed not acceptable today, and many were controversial enough to draw criticism at the time.

Havana, Apr 11 (Prensa Latina) The 22nd International Biennial of Graphic Humor, to be held virtually until April 14, will start on Sunday with the inauguration of the collective exhibition of Superheroes cartoons.
Some 20 works by 15 local artists make up the exhibition, which recreates the fight against the Covid-19 pandemic, especially by Cuban healthcare personnel.
The caricatures will be exhibited outside the Ministry of Culture and bear the signatures of renowned humorists such as Adan Iglesias, Enrique Lacoste, Lazaro Miranda, Alejandro Falco, Alfredo Martirena and Aristides Hernandez.
